On your birthday you get cards and presents from members of your family and your friends. Some people have a birthday party for their friends. There’s usually a birthday cake with one candle for each year of your age. The person with the birthday blows out the candles and make a wish.

You can have a party in your own home, but nowadays a lot of people have their party in a restaurant.

            Some older children don’t have a party. They take some of their friends to the cinema, to a bowling alley or somewhere like that.

            Birthdays are very important in Britain. We don’t have ’name days’.
